Beware: Temporary Health Insurance
If you need coverage because of pre-existing conditions, going the temporary insurance route may NOT be the best course of action. COBRA protects a laid off worker and guarantees "portability" i.e., that the next benefit plan with an employer cannot penalize you due to pre-existing conditions.
Electing to take out temporary insurance - rather than electing to go with COBRA - can cost you in the longterm, as it can make you ineligible for coverage until a long waiting period has been satisfied with future insurance coverage from an employer.
Here is a good article, wh/ also lists various agents in the Charlotte area who provide temporary insurance policies.
