Online resumes and applications

So, it's been a while since I had to send out a resume. I pulled out my old one, shined it up a bit, and got ready to submit it to some lucky hiring manager. But wait, they don't want my nice, shiny resume. They want me to copy it into their little online box (where it magically becomes dull and boring - losing all its luster)and send it off into never-never land somewhere. What the heck?? Is there no way to stand out from the crowd? Is there no way to speak to a real live person?

There must be a secret that I'm missing here...come on, spill it! Who knows the secret to speaking to the hiring manager without going through the computerized screening process?
